PPE isn’t a modern invention! Today we are familiar with safety wear – goggles, boots, gloves and such like but our ancestors were also mindful of how dangerous working environments could be.
In Japan warriors would wear metal body armour to protect themselves, in France workers wore ‘sabots’ a type of wooden clog to protect their feet from damage. (Interestingly the word ‘sabotage’ comes from the action, during the French Revolution of throwing cogs into the wheels of machines to stop them working).
When steel toe capped shoes and boots were invented they were soon adopted by the mods in the 1960s as a fashion statement, today this need to keep things trendy has resulted in safety shoes being produced in a number of styles and colours to suit all tastes.
